Matt Pini (Principal Attorney)

Matt Pini is a registered Australian and New Zealand Patent and Trade Marks Attorney with experience in the patent profession from 1999 and nine years experience from 1990 as an Australian Patent Examiner prior to joining the Patent Profession. He holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (Applied Physics) from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, a Graduate Diploma of Engineering and a Graduate Certificate of Engineering both in Information & Communications Technology from the Institution of Engineers Australia and Deakin University, respectively.

Background

Prior to establishing Pini IP in July 2005, Matt was based in the Melbourne head office of a large public listed company for two years in a corporate “in-house” role, which provided Matt with experience from a client’s perspective within a company that creates, develops, and delivers high-value technology-rich products and services primarily to large and growing international markets in diverse technical fields such as fire detection, video surveillance and biomedical instrumentation. In his in-house role, Matt had responsibility for identifying, protecting and maintaining the valuable intellectual property assets of the company, including patentable inventions, trade marks, designs and commercial know-how, which drive product sales in the company’s major world markets.

His previous experience in industry during the 1980’s included the development of the first automated drive system for the 74″ reflector astronomical telescope at Mt Stromlo and research and testing within a highly innovative software development company, which created simulation products for the plastics injection moulding industry.

Matt then worked as a Patent Examiner at the Australian Patent Office in Canberra (IP Australia) gaining extensive experience examining patents in digital computing hardware and software, telecommunications, electronic instrumentation (including medical instruments) as well as, sports, games, amusements, advertising, labelling and display. Matt was chosen to scrutinise affidavits on behalf of the Commissioner of Patents submitted by IBM Corporation to the Australian Federal Court in the landmark computer related patent case IBM Corp v Commissioner 22 IPR 417 (1991). He gained a working knowledge of procedural matters put before the Patent Office including oppositions, extensions of time (in which Matt authored a prominent Patent Office Decision) and in some instances appeals to the Australian Federal Court.

Following on from his experience in the Australian Patent Office, Matt worked a period of four years in a major Australian Patent & Trade Mark Attorney firm. During this period, he acted to capture, protect and manage the intellectual property of clients in many industries including information technology, telecommunications, electronic instrumentation, automotive, machine tools, business & finance, energy, fluid treatment, mining and mineral resources.  Most notably, Matt was heavily occupied in this time drafting patents for the core technology of 3G wireless standards invented in Melbourne by Ericsson.

Matt also has substantial experience and knowledge of the law of business method patents in Australia.

Current Practice

As the principal practitioner of Pini IP, Matt now acts for clients with activities in industries such as semiconductors, medical instruments, assisted reproductive technology (ART), dental & healthcare, sleep therapy, brain research, gaming industries, particle detection, telecommunications, security and surveillance, safety beacons, travel, traffic management, transport, logistics, supply chain management, real estate, resources, sports, education, automotive, stockfeed, agriculture and the food & restaurant industry.

He has been a fellow of the Institute of Patent & Trade Mark Attorneys of Australia and is a member or participant in FICPI (International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys), AIPLA (US IP Lawyers Association) and AIPPI (International Association for the Protection of IP, European Forum). In Australia, Matt regularly attends functions and seminars of AMCHAM (American Chamber of Commerce), IPSANZ (The Intellectual Property Society of Australia and New Zealand), and has been a past inductee of the ACBC (Australia China Business Council, Victoria). Matt has been recognised as a significant contributing mentor for the Victorian Biotech Entrepreneurs Business Skills Program under YAA (Young Achievement Australia).
